The whole idea of the “two state solution” is that Palestine would be the Gaza Strip, East Jerusalem, and the rest of the West Bank, while Israel gets to keep everything it took in 1948. You can think of statehood as a legal fiction like being a corporation, a union, etc. It creates an "individual" to interact with other "individuals" in international systems. 




For what this means it depends on a lot. Largely, recognition means that a state is recognizing an other state has the same rights and responsibilities that they have and that the government recognized as representing that state will work within the framework of those rights and responsibilities. 




Functionally, this could mean anything from signing treaties between two states, to involvement in international/national courts to resolve conflicts between the two, to even certain funding programs like the IMF which is much more accessible by states than non-states.

The US thinks that Palestine is not a state. There are no US diplomats to Palestine.

The UK's opinion doesn't cause Palestine to become a state, but it's a move in that direction. Whether something is a state is not an all-or-nothing thing like being pregnant. If international opinion shifts far enough, and enough of the markers of statehood exist (international recognition, clear enforced borders, a military, a stable permanent government, treaties with other states, a seat in the UN), at some point we'd say (or at least I'd say, like anyone cares) that Palestine is a state.

The "significant shift away from alignment with the US" is the truly important part.

Recognizing a Palestinian state doesn't change much in the Middle East, but a lot of countries held back on doing it because of the soft power of the United States. The US does not want to recognize a Palestinian state before there are binding security assurances for Israel (e.g. relinquishing their claims to all of Israel's territory). Most Western countries hope instead that statehood will encourage Palestinians to come to the table. But the US's long-time allies held off on doing this out of respect for the US and to show solidarity with its main ally.

Now that they do recognize Palestine, it shows that these countries have lost a lot of respect for the US. That is a massive failure of the current president's diplomacy efforts. He insulted these countries too much, imposed tariff taxes on them for ridiculous reasons (even ones with trade surpluses!), and all-around he's just a dick that nobody likes or respects.

For decades, the US had the diplomatic power to keep these countries on our side when it came to recognizing Palestinian statehood (since 1988, when the PLO declared it). Now we're seeing that the US's power has slipped enormously, in a short amount of time. Republicans will cry sour grapes, but it's a major show of weakness that might lead to a long-term split in the US's core diplomatic alliances: That's the "significant shift" that OP mentions.

I think it's a push to end this nearly-century-long conflict once and for all.

Either Palestine becomes a real state, recognizes and co-exists next to the State of Israel and everyone lives happily ever after.

Or, more likely, this bolsters Palestinian terrorism and violence, the new Palestinian state becomes run either officially or behind the scenes by fundamentalist Jihadist terrorists (which Israel will be able to detect via intelligence anyways) - this Israel will not be willing or able to tolerate, especially post-7/10 and Israel will invade and capture both Gaza and the West Bank, possibly annex, who knows what will happen to the millions of Palestinians, and thus reaching the other side of the end of the nearly-century-long conflict.

It's a power move and the right one. Israel does not have the authority to decide the statehood of Palestine. The West is now just following over 100 other countries so it's not like something outrageous. 

With this the West (except Germany and the US) is drawing some clear red lines. If Israel wants to escalate and break them very fast just follow what Ben Gvir and Smotrich are demanding right now and annex the state of Palestine (plus other areas Israel is currently occupying). There are still 10% in Germany who are supporting the ongoing war in Gaza. If Israel crosses the red line those will become 5% and the German government will change their opinion as well. 

I don't get the "Hamas is rewarded" way of thinking. Hamas will not be part of the political landscape in Palestine. Their ideas are not and won't be tolerated from the West. So what did Hamas achieve? That the PA/PLO/Fatah are now forever in charge if they play it smart? Those "technocrats" are rallying politicians and NGOs all around the world to give them the political power in a new state. Right now their PR campaign seems to work.

If people think that Hamas is happy with a Palestinian state without them....idk what to say. Now a new government will get the money, gear and political backing to sweep the daily life, areas and political thought of Hamas/the Muslim brotherhood and their ideas. What was before a civil war, not really interesting for most of the world, is now a carte blanche against Hamas.

Now, the PA, Abbas and many of those factions are still corrupt and some are even still hopeful to destroy Israel one day. But to accept Palestine as a state will demand changes from the government that would have not been possible before. If they don't behave the world can now easily use sanctions. If we view Palestine now as a state instead of a giant refugee crisis (like many today in the West), people are more willing to accept harsh measures against Palestine. So if we still find disgusting textbooks from the education department in the near future it's time to stop some payments  or openly demand a political change. 

They can now also support the democratic movement easier and the local civil society can better help/train (upcoming) democrats as well.

But it's an important political tool. Israel fundamentally does not want Palestine recognised as a state, but their horrific actions with the famine are too severe to ignore.

Foreign recognition means the Palestinian Authority can open diplomatic relationships with those countries - embassies and treaties. Most importantly, it will trigger Britain, France, etc, to revisit their treaties with Israel.

If Britain recognises Palestine as a state, then they can now view Israel's actions as meeting a legal threshold of war crimes, and thereby exit various treaties they have with Israel. So, it can begin a withdraw of Western support.

For example, it would mean that Britain would no longer import agriculture from lands invaded and settled by Israel.

It’s just something politicians say to get votes.

The recent comments have tended to include the requirement that Hamas gives up their Jewish hostages that they keep in cages and surrender. This is the same demand Israel is making, nothing more and nothing less. And it is unlikely to happen so the politicians won’t actually have to do anything.

There is also the matter of who would they be recognizing as the leader of Palestine? Hamas? They don’t rule the West Bank and the group that does insists that Hamas surrenders and lets the Palestinian Authority rule. Which is again just the same thing that Israel wants. Domestic pressure to do something for Palestinians, which prompts countries to look to do something. However, at the same time, especially in the EU, it is impossible to impose any very impactful actions because of the extremely divided positions of European countries on this matter, which makes a majority let alone unanimity very difficult to get. 

For example, every single time this matter was discussed in the EU including yesterday and a couple weeks ago, not even light sanctions on Israel got the majority support required in the EU to pass.

The initiative came from the Arabian states. They want most of all Hamas gone, but need to “give” something to the majority of their citizens who feel or think the anti Jewish/Israel propaganda is still on. France for example is heavily interconnected with Qatar money and it will be more in the next five years. At the same time, as many said, it’s about a gesture - a stupid gesture at the wrong time, but still a way to react to the extreme anti Israel sentiment we see in the media. The UN presented a peace treaty to create Israel and Palestine (before then Palestine meant where Jews lived in the Middle East, the Arabs mostly identified themselves as Jordanians). Then-Palestinians and Jordanians agreed to a deal, and the Palestinians bought land from Jordanians at highly inflated prices and called it Israel. Then the surrounding Arab countries sent in armies to take back all the purchased land and lost.

Israel and allies have presented many peace treaties to the various governing bodies over the past few decades. They’ve all been rejected, and often accompanied with wars and terrorism (look up the first and second intifadas).

So why are some countries recognizing a state that has no official borders or governing body? I honestly don’t know. I’m certain antisemitism has a part to play, as you can see plenty of blood libel, holocaust inversion, and DARVO in the news coverage of what’s going on. Some people have speculated that it’s a way to get Hamas to agree to a peace deal, but it’s clear from their original charter that they want the entirety of the land and want to kill every Jew (worldwide slaughter of every Jew was in their founding charter).

Sometimes things just make no sense. And acknowledging a fascist state leaders by a terrorist organization who’s sworn death to all worldwide democracies makes no sense.
